Bathing beside a planted wall turns the smallest room of a Studio City ADU into one of its nicest. We give the bathroom a tall window or a glass door onto a small walled court with ferns or bamboo, so daylight reaches the shower while neighbors see nothing. Inside, the room still has to work hard, with a curbless shower, an exhaust fan on a humidity sensor and storage for towels.

The bathroom and its court

The court can be as small as a few steps deep, enclosed by a stucco or block wall tall enough for privacy. Its floor drains to a gravel bed or a small drain, and a hose bib makes watering easy. In the bathroom, the window or door uses obscured safety glass where the code requires it near the tub or shower, and the floor tiles can continue outside so the two spaces read as one. A ventilation fan still runs, since an open window cannot be counted on, and a warm towel bar keeps the room comfortable on cool mornings.

Permits through LADBS

Safety glazing near the shower and the fan's duct route are two details LADBS will look for on a Studio City set, along with setbacks, the gap to the main house and the energy forms. The courtyard wall needs its own footing detail where its height calls for one. We draw both on the plans, submit, respond to corrections and then build in inspected stages. The bathroom court and the main patio are finished last, after the heavy work and deliveries are done.
