Decks & Patios in Playa Vista

Playa Vista decks and patio covers planned from a measured door sill, a probed wall and a look at the eave line, with LADBS plans prepared and filed.

Tell us about the opening, deck or room

We read every request and reply to set up a measure. Photos of the wall or yard help, and we ask for them by email. How we use your details.

The first tool out on a Playa Vista visit is a tape against the door sill. The drop from sill to ground sets the deck level, the drainage gap and the number of steps, so every later decision hangs on that single figure. After it comes a probe of the wall the deck will attach to, and a glance up at the eave line in case a cover is planned.

Measuring from the sill

The sill height is taken at the door, then again at the far corner of the planned footprint, so any fall in the yard shows up before the frame is drawn. We note the swing of the door, the finish on the exterior wall and the flashing above the threshold. Siding or stucco gets lifted in a small patch where the ledger will bolt on, to see what the fasteners will meet. Findings go on the sketch with dimensions, and the quote follows from that sketch.

Then the ground and the roof

A thin rod goes into the soil at the footing locations to feel for soft fill, and marked utility lines are traced across the footprint. Overhead, the eave height and the gutter path decide how a cover can attach and where roof water will land. Because Playa Vista lies within the City of Los Angeles, LADBS reviews the plans, and coastal zone rules can touch some lots. All of that is looked up before the plans are finished. Any buried line found along the way moves the footing location.
