Sleep is the job the bedroom of a San Dimas backyard unit has to do well, so we plan it before the rooms around it. Its window goes on a wall facing neither the main house nor the strongest afternoon light, set high enough that a bed fits under it and nobody passing can look in. A closet along the shared side softens sound, and the bath sits a few steps from the bed.
