Water off the roof of a Covina backyard unit should land well clear of the patio that roof helps to shade. Pitching a single slope down toward the back fence sends runoff away from the glass door and the outdoor room, and the tall side left facing the yard has space for clerestory windows that pull light deep into the main room.

Gutters, downspouts and the yard

A continuous aluminum gutter runs along the low eave and drops into downspouts at the corners farthest from the patio. Each one discharges into a planting bed, a gravel trench or a buried pipe that carries water to a dry well, never toward the neighbor or back against the slab. Finished grade falls away from the walls on every side. An inland lot may go dry for long stretches and then take the odd hard storm, so the gutter is sized for the heavy hours.

Tying the patio cover to the roof

A patio cover joined to the unit needs its own fall and its own gutter, with flashing tucked under the wall cladding where the ledger meets the building. A freestanding pergola avoids that joint and lets the slats shed water straight onto pavers laid with a slight cross slope. Covina's building department reviews the roof framing and drainage with the rest of the set. One fixed price covers the drawings, and building costs are worked out on a later visit to the Covina yard.
