The patio slab beside a new Covina room is a drainage surface as much as a place to sit. Its pitch, the grade beyond it and the gutter outlets above it decide whether rain reaches the new wall. We set those slopes together with the glass doors, because a door sill that sits low in a wet spot is the first place a leak finds.

Pitch and grade

A patio that falls toward the house holds water against the threshold. We slope the slab away from the new wall, and the soil beyond it falls away too, with a drain or a swale where the water needs to go. Downspouts from the new roof end in solid pipe that carries water past the footing. The roof edge over the glass doors gets a gutter, since a sheet of runoff splashing onto a sill is hard to flash against.

The sill at the glass

A sliding or folding door is only as dry as its sill. We set a pan flashing under the threshold, lap it behind the water barrier of the wall, and raise the sill above the patio surface by a small step that the door hardware allows. Sealant alone is a poor defense at that joint, so the metal and the paper do the work. Checking the pan with a hose before the finish goes on is cheap and shows any weakness.
