On a first visit to a Sierra Madre house, the eaves and vents get our attention before any tape measure comes out. Parts of the city fall within mapped fire hazard zones, and an opening widened toward the yard brings a patio cover or deck right up against that roofline. So we note vent types, eave framing and roof edges first, then size the opening and plan shade and outdoor surfaces that suit ember rules.
Eaves, vents and the roof edge
Open eaves with exposed rafter tails can catch embers, so we check whether a cover would tuck under them or tie in above. Attic and foundation vents near the new opening may need fine metal mesh or listed ember-resistant units. Where the roof edge carries a gutter, we look at how it drains, because a new shade roof should shed water to the side of the door. With that mapped, we measure the wall, look into the attic for bearing joists and sketch the beam an engineer will size for the wider span.
The room, the yard and the permit

The set shows the engineered header, the cover's posts and footings, and the ember-resistant products chosen for doors, decking and vents. Inside, the new sill sits close to floor height so the room and patio read as one space. Outside, insulated aluminum panels give deep shade, and a paver patio or listed composite boards finish the ground. Wind and the odd hard storm are handled with sealed thresholds, sloped paving and a drain line out to the yard.
