Patio Covers and Glass Doors in San Fernando
Attached or freestanding? Palmcrest Contractors plans San Fernando patio covers, glass doors and outdoor floors around hard sun and the city permit.
Can a patio cover hang off the back of a San Fernando house, or does it need its own posts and beam? Both can work. An attached cover ties into a ledger on the wall and keeps the roofline neat over a new set of glass doors, while a freestanding one leaves the house framing alone and can sit out in the garden as a shaded room of its own.
Attached or freestanding
An attached cover depends on the wall it hangs from. We check that the rafter tails, the stucco and the framing behind it can take a ledger, and that the cover beam can line up with the head of any new door below. A freestanding pergola needs a footing at each post and gives more freedom to place shade where the afternoon light falls. On an inland valley lot with hard sun and dry wind, solid aluminum or insulated panels keep the space below cooler, and open slats suit a planted corner.
The San Fernando building department
San Fernando is a separate city from Los Angeles, and its own building department reviews cover drawings, door openings in bearing walls and decks raised off grade. Our drawing set shows the post bases, the footing size, the ledger attachment and the beam over any widened opening. Once the plans are approved, footings and framing are inspected before they are covered, and the finished cover is signed off before the patio floor and lighting are completed. That way the shade, the doors and the outdoor floor finish as one plan.
