Patio Covers and Glass Doors in El Monte

Palmcrest Contractors plans an El Monte patio cover first when the yard has no shade, then widens the glass door behind it so room and patio share light.

Decks and patios lead the plan for an El Monte house when the yard behind it has no shade at all. Under strong midday sun, bare paving is hard to stand on, and a new glass door would only let the glare in. So the cover gets sized first. Once its footprint is fixed, the back wall opening can widen to line up with it, and the room and the patio share one frame of light.

Picking the cover

A solid insulated aluminum roof blocks the most heat and hides conduit for a fan and lights. Louvered blades tilt through the day, open for air and shut against glare or a passing shower. Wood looks warmer and needs primer and paint on every face, ends included. Posts stand on engineered footings, and the ledger is bolted into the house framing with flashing lapped over it. A gutter along the low edge drains to a downspout that discharges away from the slab. The cover is drawn to clear property lines and setbacks.

Widening the wall behind

With shade overhead, a wider opening no longer heats the room. A structural engineer sizes the header, temporary posts carry the ceiling while studs come out, and a sliding or folding door is set into a sill pan tipped toward the yard. Plans covering both the opening and the cover are filed with the El Monte building department. Its inspectors check footings, framing and the finished job before the permit closes. Screens can be fitted to the new panels for evenings spent outdoors.
