Waking up to a view of green is what the bedroom of an El Monte ADU is drawn for. A glass door or a wide window opens it to a small walled courtyard at the side, so light comes in without the main house looking through, and the room still needs a quiet wall at the head of the bed, a closet that clears the door swing and an escape opening that meets code.
A side courtyard for the bedroom
On an urban lot a private outdoor space has to be carved out with care. We set the unit so the main room opens to its patio on the yard side and the bedroom gets its own slice of ground along the side setback, screened by a wall or a slatted fence. State rules let a detached unit stand close to the side line, so the distances get confirmed on the survey first. The courtyard can be as simple as gravel, a planter and a small tree.

The living space works as kitchen, dining and sitting room in one, with a wide slider or folding door to the main patio. A pergola or solid cover over that door holds off afternoon glare, and low-e panes hold down the heat gain. City plan check in El Monte reads the drawings against state ADU law. Ceiling fans and cross ventilation through the courtyard door keep both rooms comfortable. The drawing set is one fixed price, and construction is quoted on its own after we have seen the lot.
