Windows & Doors in Torrance: Fading and Glare

Will more glass fade floors or heat the room? Torrance homes get answers on coatings, laminated panes and shade before any wall is opened.

Tell us about the opening, deck or room

We read every request and reply to set up a measure. Photos of the wall or yard help, and we ask for them by email. How we use your details.

A fair question to ask before any visit is whether a wall of glass will fade the sofa and heat the room. The answer for a Torrance living room depends on which direction the opening faces and what the glass is made of. Coatings, laminated panes and a little overhang each cut a different share of the sun, and we sort them for your wall.

What the glass can do

Low-e coatings reflect much of the heat while keeping the view clear. Laminated glass has a plastic layer that blocks most ultraviolet light, the main cause of faded fabric and floors. Tinted glass cuts glare but changes the color of the view, so samples are held against your own wall. Spectrally selective coatings give a middle path with less tint. The direction the opening faces decides which of these is worth choosing. Samples are small, so we also ask to see a larger piece in place before the order.

Shade, screens and the permit

Glass is only part of the answer. A patio cover, a deeper eave or an exterior shade can take the high sun, and blinds can be recessed into the header so they stay out of sight. Plans for a new or widened opening go to the Torrance building department, and the energy label on each pane goes on the plan check as well. Safety glass is marked for the inspector. Where a wall takes strong late sun, it gets the most attention, since that light is the harshest on floors and fabrics.
