Windows & Doors in Rancho Palos Verdes: Above the Wall

Rancho Palos Verdes patio doors and wider openings, sized after a look in the attic shows which wall the joists and rafters bear on.

Tell us about the opening, deck or room

We read every request and reply to set up a measure. Photos of the wall or yard help, and we ask for them by email. How we use your details.

Whether a wall can open often depends on what sits in the attic. In a Rancho Palos Verdes house, the direction the ceiling joists run and where the rafters land show which wall is carrying the roof. That hidden fact decides how deep the new beam must be and whether the opening can move along the wall at all.

What the attic shows

A flashlight and a ladder do the first work. If the joists run across the wall, it carries them, and the beam over a new opening must pick up that load. If they run alongside, the wall may carry little, and a wider gap becomes simpler. Rafter ties, braces or a ridge beam change the picture, so each is noted. A rough sketch of the load path then goes to the engineer. Photos of the attic go into the file so the engineer sees what we saw.

Where the finding leads

A bearing wall means a deeper beam, strong posts and footings checked at each end. A lightly loaded wall may allow a flatter, narrower beam that disappears in the ceiling. Either way, plans go to the city building department and the structural sheet carries the numbers. Where a lot is exposed to salt air, outdoor hardware is stainless. The attic notes also tell us how the roof will be held during the cut. The cut is made in stages, with the roof supported at each one.
