Openings, decks and shade in Encino, Los Angeles County
Encino Patio Covers Over Wider Glass Doors
Palmcrest Contractors plans Encino patio covers and the wider glass doors beneath them as one job, shading the opening so the room can reach the yard.
The covered patio is where an Encino house does its outdoor living, and on an inland valley lot it works hard. Strong sun, dry wind and the occasional downpour all land on it before they reach the doors behind. We design that roof and its posts together with the opening below, so the shade falls across the glass at midday and the room inside stays bright and cool enough to use.
Choosing the roof over the patio
Insulated aluminum panels give solid shade and keep heat from radiating down onto the chairs and table below. A louvered roof turns its blades with a motor or crank, opening to the sky on a mild morning and closing tight when a storm comes through. A timber pergola with open rafters gives softer, broken light and can carry a vine or a fabric shade. Whichever top you pick, a gutter along its front edge leads runoff to a downspout, and the posts stand on raised bases that keep their feet dry.
The doors beneath it and LADBS
Under the cover, the wall into the house can open wider. An engineer sizes a new beam for the span, and each end post gets a footing of its own. The doors themselves can slide, fold or pocket, and their glass is ordered with a coating that reflects heat, with its rated values printed on the label and copied onto the drawings. Encino is part of the City of Los Angeles, so LADBS reads the beam, the cover attachment and those glass values at plan check. Inspectors visit for the footings and again for the framing before any finish hides them.
